How long should a dog be walked?

What many of us do is to go for a walk with our pet, but only a few know what your dog really needs to feel good. Walking a dog is an excellent recreational activity, but you have to know how to do it so that your pet is happy. Read on to learn more.

Walking a dog: depending on many factors

A dog is a very energetic animal. Going for a walk is something they love to do and take advantage of it to get all that energy out. How long should a dog be walked? Much depends on the following factors:

If it is Cachorro…

Puppies have much more energy than their mothers. They want to go out and see the world and try many things that are new to them. The problem is that there are two factors that affect the walk: They are not as physically fit and they are often afraid to go outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Walking and exercise should be done for short periods of time, although the intensity may vary. Experts recommend doing this for 20 minutes, with the possibility of bringing a toy and a ball to play outdoors.

Small breed dogs

A Bulldog, Pug, Chihuahua or Yorkshire are high energy dogs, but that doesn’t mean you need to go for a 2-hour run with them, especially the smaller, more fragile types. A 30-minute walk plus possible exploration time is excellent and appropriate for them.

Here you must be very careful with the respiratory problems of some breeds, such as the French bulldog, as they can get out of breath easily.

Larger breeds

German Shepherds, Labradors and other large dogs need to maintain their musculature to do the activities they enjoy. It is exactly the same as with humans: The more muscle you need, the more energy you need.

A 1-hour walk with periods of high intensity seems to be adequate for these breeds. They are also chosen by cyclists and runners as a very good accompaniment to exercise. Remember to always carry some water and give it a short rest period to avoid an injury or accident.

Hunting Dogs

Hunting dogs are considered an exceptional case. Beagles, Greyhounds, Podecos, etc. They need an open field to enjoy good exercise. It is not enough to put them on a leash and go for a walk for an hour to make them happy.

A hunting dog needs to walk in a forest or field, as they need to develop their great sense of smell and their senses more developed than other breeds.

Walking a dog is a necessary activity for your dog.
