What are synthetic feline pheromones and what are they used for?

Escrito por Mundocachorro

Synthetic feline pheromones are chemicals designed to mimic the natural pheromones that cats produce naturally. It should be noted that pheromones are chemical signals that cats use to communicate with each other and their environment. These chemical signals play an important role in communication, behavior and regulation of the emotional state of cats.

Synthetic feline pheromones have been developed to help manage cat behavior in different situations. In general, these pheromones are used to reduce stress and undesirable behaviors in cats. These pheromones are found in products such as sprays, aerosols, electric diffusers and lotions.

Synthetic feline pheromones

There are several types of synthetic feline pheromones, and each has a specific purpose. Let’s see what they are:

  • Appeasing pheromones: These pheromones are known as facial pheromones or marking pheromones. Cats release these pheromones by rubbing against objects, people or other cats. Appeasing pheromones help cats feel safe and relaxed in their environment. Synthetic versions are used in products such as diffusers and sprays to calm cats in stressful situations, such as moving house, veterinary visits or the introduction of new cats.
  • Territorial marking pheromones: Cats use these pheromones to mark their territory. Territorial marking pheromones help cats feel safe in their environment and avoid conflicts with other cats. Synthetic versions can be used to prevent inappropriate marking in the home or to help new cats adapt to their environment.
  • Maternal calming pheromones: Mother cats release these pheromones to calm and soothe their young. Maternal calming pheromones can be used to help young or adult cats feel more confident and relaxed in stressful situations.

Synthetic pheromones can also be used to help cats learn new behaviors. These pheromones are used to teach cats to use their litter boxes, prevent chewing on furniture or avoid scratching furniture. These pheromones are released in the area where the cat is expected to perform the desired behavior. This helps the cat associate the area with the desired behavior.

Presentations

Synthetic feline pheromones generally come in the form of electric diffusers, aerosols or collars impregnated with the pheromones. When released into the environment, they can influence the behavior and calmness of cats by mimicking the chemical signals cats naturally use to communicate.

It is important to note that the response to synthetic pheromones may vary among cats. Some cats may respond positively and feel calmer, while others may show no noticeable change in behavior. It is always advisable to consult with a veterinarian before using any synthetic pheromone products and to consider them as part of a broader strategy to address cat behavior and welfare.
