How to care for your dog’s curly coat

In general, caring for your pet’s coat requires regular brushing and grooming, in addition to good nutrition. But, when it comes to a dog with curly hair, things can be a little different. This is because your dog’s curly coat needs some special care that we tell you about in this post.

The best known breeds with curly hair are poodle, bichon frise, bobtail, English shepherd, puli and others. These are breeds that are prepared to better withstand changes to lower temperatures. They also lose less hair because their coat is usually denser and tougher than that of other species.

Another characteristic of curly coated breeds is that they do not shed and will always continue to grow. That’s why it’s usually a bit more complicated to keep them neat and tangle-free. Take note of the following tips.

Care for your dog’s curly coat

The first thing you can take into account when caring for your dog’s curly coat is to establish a routine. This will prevent knots from forming in its coat and keep it clean and shiny at all times.

  • Bath. Bathing dogs with curly hair should be done every three to four weeks. The shampoo you use should be special for curly hair. Apply the shampoo with a gentle massage from roots to ends. You can follow the natural direction in which your dog’s hair grows. Try not to use circular movements to avoid knots or tangles.
  • Brushing. Brushing should be done every day with a brush suitable for dogs with this type of coat. Remember to avoid knots and tangles. These can become nests of parasites or produce allergies.
  • Routine. Untangle the hair with your fingers. Then use a special comb for curly hair to separate the hair and undo any knots that may have formed. After that, you can run the brush through the entire coat and remove the dead hair. This way you can delay the appearance of new knots.
  • Cutting. It is advisable to give your curly-haired pet frequent haircuts. It is preferable that you do not shave it, but have the cuts done by a professional.

Remember that if you do not brush your dog’s coat frequently, knots may form and there may be no choice but to cut them. In addition, this type of cut must be performed by a professional.

Maintenance

Ideally, your curly-haired canine pet’s coat should be soft, moisturized, shiny and tangle-free. As mentioned above, you should use a special shampoo for this type of hair.

In the market you can find different options, among which those containing avocado oil can be a good choice. This is because it is a product capable of moisturizing and repairing, while preventing knots and defining the curls of your dog’s coat. It will also be able to prevent hair frizz.
